Basic breeder on the DENYS-LOFT
The story of:

“The REMI-STICHELBAUT 3037744/54”

Throughout the history of the pigeon sport there have been a few extraordinarily prepotent breeders whose progeny have won generation after generation in many different lofts, in many different countries. One of the best ones is that of the worldfamous “REMI-STICHELBAUT” 3037744/54 bred and raced by Descamp-Vanhasten, and later bought by the Denys-family.“REMI” was sired by the “Oude Remi”3026482/51 from Remi Stichelbaut, the brother of Alois.Remi’s dam was  “’t Bleeske”3032627/51 a sister to “Sneppe”.She was bred  from “De Oude Crayonné Stichelbaut” 1341318/45 when paired to his daughter “Kortpootje” 3238467/47.Descamp-Vanhasten did a lot of inbreeding on his Stichelbaut-pigeons.As we can see from the photo the “Remi” was a BC-cock.His father was a dark blue cock. That is probably the reason why he easily  bred blue children too. His mother was a BC-hen. “Remi” sired many top birds at the loft of Descamp-Vanhasten that went on to be outstanding producers and racers. One of them was “Zwarte Remy”3052836/63, he sired 9th International Barcelona 1975.An other excellent example is the “Zwarte Remi” 3469622/57 ,bought by G.and M.Vanhee, he is the head of the line of the famous “Atooms” of Vanhee, he is also the father of 2 sons that won a 1st National:

1st National Limoges 1962 -2813 birds for Vanhee ,
1st National Périgueux 1965 for Norbert Norman,on his turn this champion bred:
1st National
Limoges 1971-10060 birds by Norbert Norman.
Also other “Remi-children” bred national/international toppers:
1st National
Angouleme 1969 by Gentil Delplanque,
3rd International ,
Barcelona 1973.
Also a direct daughter of this “Zwarte Remi 57” , called “Atoom-duivin” 3100022/63 became one of the topbreeding hens in the Vanhee–loft at the time of their glorious years.Generation after generation the Remi-line produced topstars. In our Denys-lofts we cultivated the strains of the Worldchampions Cattrysse Brothers and André Vanbruaene, and were extremely successful when the weather was hot and the sky was blue., but when it was raining and visibility was low, as we often experience in West-Europe, we  had back luck.So we were looking to cross in “bad weather pigeons” that were also good to fly in the cold polar winds from the sea., this in order to create an ideal pigeonfamily to perform well in all kinds of weather. This was of course a hope ,a dream, not easy to realize.

In September 1965 we read an article that Descamp-Vanhasten would sell part of his breeders., and his Stichelbaut’s performed well in the bad weather and the cold winds..We also knew from various sources such as Roger Depraetere,an old neighbour of Michel Descamp, that his strain was ideal crossingmaterial.Michel Descamp was the neighbour of Aloïs Stichelbaut and based his loft on this strain. He was an excellent long distance man : in West-Flanderns he was considered to be unique, because he won the 1st Championship from the West-Vlaamse Vereniging 3 years on the run in 1955-1956-1957, so he was called “Emperor of the “West-Vlaamse Vereniging.”In Belgium when you win a pigeon championship 3 times , you are called“Emperor”. He won also 1st National Montauban,1st National Libourne,1st National Marathon.,.So my father Camiel and myself were every Monday in the Courtrai-area, and we took our chance to call at   Michel’s house. On Mondays his butchershop was closed and he could give us enough time to visit the breeding loft.At this moment in the breeding loft there were 12 pairs. In our opinion the  3 stars were: “Remi” 3037744/54, “Zwarte Remy” 3052836/63 and “Yzeren Kennedy”3052838/63 a direct son of “JONGE YZEREN”3064724/57.The world famous“Jonge IJzeren” was bought by Jerome and Roger Vereecke in the spring of 1965.

The  mating hen for the “Jonge IJzeren”was a daughter of “Remi”. We had the chance to buy the 3 above remaining breeding stars, finally we only bought one The oldest one the “Remi” 3037744/54.We should have bought them all 3,but we could not afford it that time. We already purchased one goldmine, one superbreeder and this was enough.

At the time we introduced him his condition was still very, very good:he still had all his very long superb muscles and

his eyes were brightening just like  a 3-year old cock.

“REMI” had silver eyes, the best breeding eyes a pigeon fancier can dream off.The rich feather quality(very soft) and fantastic breeding eyes were definitely thé great qualities of the Stichelbaut-strain.

The “Remi”also had some bronze in the feathers, and in this line this is still appearing, as well as the silver eyes. The bronze-colour originates from one of the basic pigeons from Aloïs Stichelbaut, a pigeon from Armand Vandecandelaere. The pigeon was from the strain of Lagae-Blondeel.Blondeel was a well-known long distance racer in Waregem, and his loft was based on the Vandevelde’s.Paul Bostyn was very keen on the Stichelbaut’s with the bronze feathers..So on one occasion the “Geschelpte Remi”B67-3449637, a son of “Remi”who had the bronze feathers was paired to a sister of “Chico”.The “Geschelpte Remi”also proved to be a breeding champion, his grandson won 1st International Perpignan 1976 for André Vermote. In the same first Perpignan-race Vanhee won 5th International with “Zwarte Remi” 3103018/73 an other star of the Remi-dynasty.
At the  time we purchased “Remi” our lofts were situated at my father’s place in Gistel, this was 50 KM from Lauwe.

“Remi” was 11 years old, and we kept no prisoners in our breeding loft,so we let him out and adapt to the new loft, and we succeeded. He went back to his old loft in the Statiestreet in Lauwe once or twice, but finally we could adapt

him in the new loft. We paired him up immediately, unfortunately  he did not accept the new hens:he even scalped two of them. Finally the 3rd female he accepted and we still were able to breed 2 children-2 cocks, a dark blue and a dark checker, from him in the autumn 1965.We were very happy. When the news was spread that we purchased the “Remi” all competitors congratulated us, and said this will be a real uplift for your breeding loft.

And indeed it was. In 1966 we paired him to various hens, and he accepted them all.Now “Remi” was used to his new place and environment, and looked very happy .He fertilized like a young cock.:every nest were 2 babies. We often passed the eggs under other pairs, because we preferred to pair up the “Remi”with different hens, in order to find the right mating. This was not necessary, because later with all different hens, he bred fantastic children. He bred no waste, he was so dominant  that he passed his high qualities to all his children and also in further generations.

1967 was the season that  direct children and grandchildren of the “Remi”were tested in racing in the Denys-lofts in Gistel. In this period the longest race for yearlings was Angouleme-646 KM.So our yearling team was sent to
Angouleme the final test: the first arrival was the “ZAAG”
3361373/66  a dark blue cock,a direct son of “Remi” .He won the 2nd prize Provincial beaten by Desmet-Lippens As a matter of fact he was beaten by bad trapping:he always entered slowly.I suppose we took him one time in the wrong way, when we clocked him in the beginning of his racing career, and he always remembered it and was a little afraid to enter to.

The “ZAAG” won 1st Club.In this 1966-yearling team there was also the later superstars the “Bliksem” 1st International St Vincent 1969.and “Geschelpten” 5 X Barcelona. From that race “Bliksem” won 30th provincial. The race from Angouleme first was provincial, than national and finally changed into the well-known classic race  of Limoges National Yearlings. The “Zaag” had a splendid racing career, winning from Dourdan,Bordeaux International,Montauban National,etc.. Untill one raceday he arrived back from Angouleme injured.Than we decided to move him to the breedingloft, immediatly he turned out to be an outstanding breeder and produced champions in 1st generation like “Cendreetje” 3353039/70 and “Mademoiselle” 3353130/70h, in 2nd generations Barcelona-stars like “Blauweneus” 063/70 and “Averechtse Pen”502/70.In 1974  he was transferred to the lofts of Ryosaku Oguro, Japan.,where he became again a basic pigeon of this champion loft.Generation after generation this line produced topstars.

In 1967 also Angouleme-races -646 KM, for young birds were organized. The first such race was organised by the clubs Wakken-Bissegem the second weekend of August. We entered a team of 10 young birds. It was a bad race ,there were no day-birds.The next morning at 7.30 AM a young cock arrived from the east and won 1st club and 2nd Provincial; He should have won 1st provincial too, because the winner had cheated, he had raced with old birds and had changed the ring. Anyway we called our new star the “Wakken”,because he won 1st prize in the Wakken-club.“WAKKEN” was a direct son of “Remi”when paired to “Vechtertje”, a daughter of “Vechter”1st National Limoges 1965 and “Grijspenne”(last daughter of our immortal “Coppi”48) The “Wakken” was sent 3 times to Angouleme-646 KM as a  6 month’s old youngster. So the “Remi-bloodline” was tested until the bottom, and past this severe test glorious.

The brother to “WAKKEN” was the “LINKSEN”3340941/68,a latebred 1968 banded on the left foot.”Linksen” was probably the best breeding son we ever had from the “REMI” For many years the “Linksen” was paired to the “Geschotene” 3361336/66 :this pair produced the “Tijger” 8.National Cahors,43.National StVincent. This pair also produced the mother of the Barcelona-star the “TEE”. So 1967 was the first season we raced the “REMI-pigeons”and we had immediate success in the hardest conditions. The “Remi-Stichelbauts” formed more or less the missing link for us:they always  scored good  or bad weather. From now on we crossed the “Remi-bloodlines”  in with full power with our existing strain.. In 1966 “Remi” was also paired to the “Dax-hen” and this produced the “Beer” 48.National San Sebastian 1970.Later the “Beer” was exported to Mr; Teiji Uemura, Tokyo ;the late president of the Japan Racing Pigeon Association. In this period 1965-1970 time an other superbreeder  was in full action in our lofts.
It was the “Favori” 3308923/63 a direct son of our Golden pair: “SPRINTER” 3101595/57, a direct Cattysse and daughter Kaers 3208806/56. The GOLDEN PAIR produced the “Vechter “1st National Limoges 1965, de “Beheyt” etc;

De “Favori” was also one of the sons.He was very fast in middle distance and very clever, but he did not have the  power for racing like the “Vechter”, but as a breeder he was a phenomen. Especially the cross of the bloodlines of the “Remi” with the “Favori” proved to be a hit. The “Favori” was the grandsire of “ZITTER” 1st National Cahors, the “PRINS” 1st National Ace Pigeon Fond KBDB 1974,1st International Narbonne 1974, and also of the immortal “Tee”.

When I married in October 1969, I based my new breeding loft  in Zulte on the children of “Favori” and“Remi”.The 1970-children of “Remi”were the last children the 16-year old Remi produced.

The last 4 children: were the “ZWARTE REMI” 3353146/70,de “DIKKE REMI”3353090/70, the “LANGE REMI” and the “Daugher “REMI”3353207/70.They were real gold for my new

Thank to the cross of the “Remi-bloodlines” and the “Favori-bloodlines ,only 4 seasons later in 1974 I won all possible long distance championships in Belgium, such as

1.National Marathon
1st General National Champion KBDB .
1st General Marathon
1st Marathon Old birds Oost-Vlaanderen
1st Criterium des As Entente Belge

In 1974 I also won the 1st International Narbonne and 1st National Ace pïgeon Fond KBDB
With champion “PRINS”4149064/71.The father of “PRINS” was the “BLAUWE PRINS” a son of “Favori” when paired to a daughter of “REMI”. The Stichelbaut-pigeons were known for their long life.So also “REMI” he died on August the 3rd 1974.,at the age of 20 years old. So “REMI” passed away at the end of the 1974-season, in this season his dynasty reached the top of the Belgium Pïgeon Sport. “REMI” could now rest in peace:his children, his grandchildren had taken over his task.
